Nice but noisy Onsen!
This place is fairly expensive, but it only has a few rooms. We came there by bus from the train station, which is an experience in itself. They were expecting us and we were taken to our room. It was a typical Ryokan room with one low dinner table and one normal work table, with a view of the mountain forest. We tried the outdoor Onsen first, gender separated and full nudity. There were two pools, one hot and one cold. It was a good feeling to sit in the hot water looking at the green mountains. I was a bit disappointed by the noisiness and it was not the Europeans, it was a bunch of young Japanese guys who were loud, however I went back in the early morning the day after and was alone in the pool. It was a great experience to sit there in the light rain and just hearing the sound of nature. The same morning I tried the indoor Onsen as well. It was traditional and I was there alone, which was nice. In the evening we had a splendid dinner in our room. The dishes just kept on coming. The food was fresh and tasty and the service was perfect. The staff doesn't speak much English, but it works well anyway. Later, they came and arranged the futons and we slept well on them. In the morning, we again had a great morning meal in the room. So much good food! After breakfast we checked out and got on the free transport to Kurama train station, where the old train took us towards Kyoto station. I travelled with my 15 year old daughter, but I can recommend this place for couples.
