Authentically depression-era coal camp
Positives:
--very clean
--great fenced yard for dog (even has a driveway gate)
--remodel was done in spirit of the original depression era construcion--they used what was available and made it look pretty good.
--nice front porch
--new, comfortable furniture and bedding.
--quite neighborhood.
--good price for a house and fenced lot.
--the heating system is very efficient.
Negatives:
--had to remind the host to send us the entry instructions.
--house is not well marked. We arrived after dark and couldn't see the black house numbers on the dark brown porch post. The house numbers face the side of the house so they cannot be seen easily from the street. The mailbox directly in front of the house shows the neighbor's address so it looks like the rental is actually not the address it should be. Entering a fenced property, after dark, is a good way to get shot so we were VERY tentative in approaching the house. We finally found an old image of the house on Google Streetview which showed the correct, though very faded, house numbers, convincing us that the house was indeed the one we were looking for.
--the neighborhood is a bit sketchy. The three or four lots to either side are well kept and presentable but there are a few houses along the street which look abandoned. We would not have stayed if there had not been a fence around the yard.
If you're from West Virginia (we are) and have lived in a coal town before (we have), this property is just like you'll remember.
